In­ter­pre­ting

What in­for­ma­tion do you need for a quote?

In order to pro­vide you with an ac­cu­rate quo­ta­tion, we need to know the key de­tails of the event: the venue, the event dates, the sche­duled times, and the source and target lan­guages to be in­ter­preted. It is also im­portant that we know which in­ter­pre­ting tech­no­logy you plan to use and whe­ther you have al­ready or­ga­nised this or if we should ar­range it for you. We also need to know the sub­ject matter of the event so that we can select the right in­ter­pre­ters for the job.

What is the dif­fe­rence bet­ween si­mul­ta­neous, con­se­cu­tive and whispered interpreting?

Si­mul­ta­neous in­ter­pre­ting: the in­ter­pre­ters speak almost si­mul­ta­neously with the speaker and usually use tech­nical aids such as booths or tour guide systems.

Con­se­cu­tive in­ter­pre­ting: the speaker talks in sec­tions while the in­ter­preter makes notes using a spe­cial tech­nique and then in­ter­prets the con­tent after each section.

Whispered in­ter­pre­ting: the in­ter­preter sits di­rectly next to the target person and whis­pers the con­tent to them wi­t­hout technology.

What does source lan­guage mean?

The source lan­guage is the main con­fe­rence lan­guage that spea­kers will be using at the event. In the DACH region this is usually German or English.

Does it matter whe­ther German or Eng­lish is spoken?

Yes. The actual source lan­guage is im­portant to know in ad­vance. Alt­hough some in­ter­pre­ters on the German market work with German and Eng­lish as active working lan­guages, the source lan­guage has to be cla­ri­fied in ad­vance. If this is not yet cer­tain in your plan­ning, we can of course book in­ter­pre­ters who work from and into both languages.

Why do in­ter­pre­ters (almost) always work in pairs?

Due to the high level of con­cen­tra­tion re­quired during si­mul­ta­neous in­ter­pre­ting, in­ter­pre­ters always work in a team of two. For very com­plex topics, they even work in teams of three. They al­ter­nate seam­lessly every 20-30 mi­nutes. This means that if the event lasts more than an hour, two in­ter­pre­ters are usually sche­duled. For events las­ting up to around one hour, we can dis­cuss the sche­du­ling of in­ter­pre­ters in con­sul­ta­tion with our team and, as long as suf­fi­cient pre­pa­ra­tion ma­te­rials are pro­vided in ad­vance, it may be pos­sible to work with just one in­ter­preter. If only one in­ter­preter is booked, a break of at least 10-15 mi­nutes must be in­cluded in your plan­ning after approx. 40 minutes.

How much does an in­ter­preter cost?

Con­fe­rence in­ter­preter teams nor­mally charge a daily rate. If more than 7–8 hours of work are re­quired, ad­di­tional hours cost extra. A standby time of 30 mi­nutes before the start of the event is free of charge. Travel ex­penses and any over­night stays are added to this. We always try to give pre­fe­rence to in­ter­pre­ters based at your event lo­ca­tion to mi­ni­mise travel costs.

Do you pro­vide in­ter­pre­ting equip­ment and platforms?

Yes, we offer a full range of tech­nical equip­ment, including

  • Con­fe­rence in­ter­pre­ting booths
  • Whis­pe­ring sys­tems and mobile tour guide systems
  • Remote in­ter­pre­ting plat­forms (RSI) for vir­tual events
  • AI sup­port, if feasible

Our tech­nical part­ners ensure smooth in­te­gra­tion and re­liable qua­lity. Ad­di­tional event tech­no­logy such as audio sys­tems, screens, etc. can also be pro­vided on request.Verfügung ge­stellt werden.

Can AI al­ready be used for in­ter­pre­ting today?

Yes, no­wa­days AI can even be used for in­ter­pre­ting. Ho­wever, by re­lying on the cloud, the con­tent will not be con­fi­den­tial. For good speech re­co­gni­tion, it is im­portant that your spea­kers speak cle­arly and flu­ently. The use of AI in­ter­pre­ting is par­ti­cu­larly sui­table for tight bud­gets or, for ex­ample, brea­kout ses­sions or par­allel work­shops that take place as part of a larger event. 

What does on-site sup­port mean?

Our on-site sup­port en­sures a smooth pro­cess and coor­di­na­tion bet­ween you as the cus­tomer, the in­ter­pre­ting team and the tech­ni­cians. On-site sup­port is available as a cen­tral point of contact for all mat­ters re­la­ting to in­ter­pre­ting. For ex­ample, we take care of the team brie­fing, feed­back loops and qua­lity con­trol during the event, check the tech­no­logy and cover the transfer of the team from one place to an­o­ther at com­plex, large-scale events.

What are your qua­lity standards?

All­round Ser­vice is cer­ti­fied ac­cor­ding to DIN EN ISO 23155, which de­ter­mine the fun­da­men­tals of con­fe­rence in­ter­pre­ting ser­vice and the re­qui­re­ments on con­fe­rence in­ter­pre­ters. The stan­dard also sets out pos­sible con­fe­rence in­ter­pre­ta­tion si­tua­tions and tech­ni­ques. We work with native-spea­king spe­cia­list in­ter­pre­ters, most of whom have long-stan­ding busi­ness re­la­ti­onships with us.

Trans­la­tions

How long does a trans­la­tion take?

It de­pends on the com­ple­xity, volume and re­quired qua­lity level. Ty­pi­cally, we can com­plete smaller pro­jects within a few days. For larger or very spe­cia­lized pro­jects, we can create a cus­to­mized sche­dule ac­cor­ding to your requirements.

Can you pro­vide cer­ti­fied translations?

Yes, we offer cer­ti­fied trans­la­tions, which are pre­pared by aut­ho­rized trans­la­tors. These are often re­quired for legal do­cu­ments, cer­ti­fi­cates and other of­fi­cial do­cu­ments. We can also pro­vide apos­tilles upon request.

What is ma­chine trans­la­tion with post-editing?

This in­volves ma­chine trans­la­ting the text using exis­ting ter­mi­no­logy da­ta­bases. An ex­pe­ri­enced pro­fes­sional trans­lator then edits the ma­chine-ge­ne­rated draft to op­ti­mize it lin­gu­i­sti­cally, gram­ma­ti­cally and sty­li­sti­cally. This option is ideal for pro­jects with tight bud­gets or shorter dead­lines. The pre­re­qui­site is that the source do­cu­ments are in an edi­table format and are not confidential.

What is an edi­table format?

By this we mean file for­mats that can be edited in over­write mode; for ex­ample, the usual Office ap­pli­ca­tions, but also JSON or SRT files. If the edi­table text con­tains non-edi­table gra­phics, they will not be re­co­g­nised by the ma­chine trans­la­tion tool.

What does CAT tool mean?

CAT tool stands for Com­puter As­sisted Trans­la­tion Tool and de­scribes an ap­pli­ca­tion that fa­ci­li­tates and ac­ce­le­rates trans­la­tion pro­cesses and im­proves their qua­lity. In par­ti­cular, the crea­tion of a TM (trans­la­tion memory) makes trans­la­tions more stan­dar­dised and less ex­pen­sive. Term da­ta­bases ensure ter­mi­no­lo­gical consistency.

Which CAT tools do you use?

We use XTM and Trados as our stan­dard software.

How are the prices determined?

We nor­mally charge per word for trans­la­tion and pro­ofre­a­ding. In rare cases, for ex­ample when re­vi­sing texts, hourly rates may apply.

Are feed­back loops in­cluded in the price?

Ge­neral queries re­gar­ding coor­di­na­tion, ter­mi­no­logy and wor­ding, they are in­cluded. Ex­ten­sive feed­back loops to de­ter­mine how texts and ter­mi­no­logy should be handled are charged at an hourly rate based on the effort involved.

Is layout editing in­cluded in the price?

In PRE­MIUM mode, layout editing is in­cluded in the price. De­pen­ding on the com­ple­xity of the for­mat­ting, ad­di­tional costs may apply in EXPERT and CORE mode if layout editing is re­quired or necessary.

Why are trans­la­tion and video trans­la­tion men­tioned separately?

In video trans­la­tion, there is no written source text. The video must first be tran­scribed for editing. If sub­titles are to be added later, the length of the text must also be taken into ac­count during translation.

What are your qua­lity standards?

DIN re­com­mends that trans­la­tions are pro­ofread by a second person so as to ensure that qua­lity con­trol is car­ried out and that qua­lity stan­dards are ad­hered to. We work with native-spea­king spe­cia­list trans­la­tors, most of whom have long-stan­ding busi­ness re­la­ti­onships with us.

Tran­scripts

What is the dif­fe­rence bet­ween CORE, EXPERT and PRE­MIUM transcriptions?

CORE tran­scrip­tion: a fast tran­scrip­tion ser­vice that is ideal for in­ternal editing or as a working template.

EXPERT tran­scrip­tion: these tran­scripts in­clude more de­tailed ana­lysis, in­clu­ding speaker iden­ti­fi­ca­tion and gram­ma­tical adjustments.

PRE­MIUM tran­scrip­tion: the hig­hest qua­lity option with ad­di­tional pho­netic ren­de­ring of un­in­tel­li­gible pas­sages, time codes and com­pre­hen­sive for­mat­ting. They are ideal for pro­fes­sional pu­bli­ca­tions or media projects.

What is the dif­fe­rence bet­ween tran­scrip­tion and video transcription?

With video tran­scrip­tion, we cap­ture the spoken text from the video in a form that is also sui­table for sub­titles. The tran­scrip­tion is done either in a Word do­cu­ment, which can be used as a tem­p­late for the sub­titles, or di­rectly into an SRT file.

How do you charge for transcripts?

We usually charge per minute.

What tran­scrip­tion rules do you follow?

We are guided by the client’s wishes. On re­quest, we can record the exact wor­ding ac­cor­ding to your own tran­scrip­tion rules. A surcharge may apply for very com­pli­cated rules or for acou­sti­cally chal­len­ging source files.
